Have 4, Can only keep 3

Postby Zacharia Matilda » Wed Sep 18, 2013 6:00 pm

I thought I would ask the experts here. I mainly play a strat through 6l6 amp (Fenders, mostly). I have 4 bjf dirt pedals and my budget dictates that one must go. I have 2 distortion pedals, DRD and EGDM, and 2 fuzz pedals, a CAF and a PPF. They all sound great to me. I am inclined to keep both fuzz pedals and sell one of the distortion boxes, but I would like to ask what would you folks do in that situation?

I dunno man, my DRD and EGDM are 2 of my favorite pedals. If pushing and shoving came to biting and screaming I don't know which I'd let go of.

I like the caf more but I find the PPF more usable personally.

Zach you really have to play both pedals for a period of time and see which one you enjoy more / will use more during gigs.

Everyone will have a differing opinion here.

For me, I would definitely sell the EGDM and keep the DRD, because I prefer the sound of a DRD more than an EGDM.

I think the PPF covers enough of the DRD that I would let the DRD go. Not much overlap going CAF>PPF>EGDM :music My EGDM (low gain) and CAF are probably my most used pedals because they are least like my amp and both work really well with my amps clean or dirty.

The PPF works for OD, Distortion and Fuzz though I tend to use it where I used to use my Fuzz Face type pedals. I did some tube rolling in my SST-30 yesterday and found my two FF style pedals do not sound as great as I remember! The only two pre-Bearfoot fuzz pedals I still like are my Swart Fuzzy Boost and my Lumpy's Tone Shop MKIII (custom tone bender MKIII in special Led Bender graphics) and the new AWF covers what I used to use the MKIII for and the AWF is not fussy about where it is in the chain.

Also, remember to try different Voltages (just make sure you do not exceed!) to control headroom and frequency response. :pedallove

I faced a similar dilemma a number of years ago. I sold the PPF and kept the DRD. To this day, I regret that decision.

I would keep the DRD as it has great tones when the gain is pushed,
but has some VERY sweet tones when used on lower settings.
I loved the EGDM as a rhythm pedal or one amp one pedal set up.
It stacked really well with the HB as does anything but would not be my choice for a lead tone.
For mine it would depend on how addicted to fuzz you are.
I would ALWAYS want at least one OD pedal that isn't a fuzz
and for that the DRD is hard to beat and I preferred for lead tones to the EGDM.

As suggested the acid test is if you were playing live,
what would you be stomping on the most, most often.
Then it becomes a matter of what is essential, indispensable
and what is great but more icing than required workhorse.
Where is there overlap......eg I used to have the Cornish P-1 and P-2.
Loved both fuzzes, but used one way more than the other.

When it's a financial requirement,
best to let your ears and feet decide rather than your heart.
