I would like to take the old 3 knob (Vol, Voice, Dist) and add a germanium or silicon booster in front using the 4th knob. I do not know if a Pre-Gain knob would do the trick. To me, the greatest Vox tones are a Rangemaster > Vox (non-top boost).

The other thing I found comparing my old BJFE 3k to the Bearfoot is the BF is a bit smoother so it actually feels & sounds like less gain until you pass 1:30 to 2 o'clock on the Dist knob.

yeah have been thinking about an Emerald Beest sort of thing - three knob lo gain EG with a pregain booster like the Beest .... dont know if thats even possible with the size constraints .....

and yeah like the CAF the higher gain also gives it more sustain and smooth clipping......not as ragged, but some like ragged in all its glory 8)

Yeah also thinking about a LoWatt - might start at clean and just add the sound of a hiwatt without the bruising gain jump ......

LoWatt sounds right up my alley. I really liked jamming on the MH4k with the gain almost totally off. Killer clarity and attack and harmonic content with the gain down.

Bruising is a good way to describe the gain ;). I'm on of those guys that loves the DRD and the EGDM and sets them right on the edge of breakup and rides it with picking dynamics. Even the lowest setting of the MH was still too much for me.

If Bjorn can put a Fuzz and delay in one box it seems more simple to add a pre-gain, but it isn't like I know anything about electronics!

I would be interested if you do the low gain EGDM if it brings back a bit of grit and more so if a pre-gain knob or even a second foot-switchable boost in front of the EGDM. The trouble is two footswitches on a the small box is not very functional for those of us with size 14 shoes

Lately I use the boxes for lower volume practice and when I play loud enough to have the amp slightly dirty I tend to turn the Dist/OD/dirt down and the volume up so it acts more like an EQ, or filter, than creating dirt. This is especially true for my Teles (I play them more than Strats these days) and I REALLY love the sounds and feel of the Zexcoil Fat T-3 bridge and the Novak paf sized WRHB in the neck. Power with clarity!

I also wanted to mention that I tend to have the best "luck" or tone with MH at 12 Volts. It sounds both bigger and cleaner.

Well.. I have never tried the BF or BJFe 4k pedals... Just my 3k BJFe... and I am almost certain that the board is gooped because if it wasn't the mojo might escape! Seriously magical pedal that one... Truly a classic! :pedallove

I love this idea regardless of whether it is a lower gain EGDM or not... I am quite happy with the gain range my 3k covers though... Just me...

thiscalltoarms wrote:I felt like the EGDM had too much of that vox congestion and compression to use in my rig.

I am enjoying the C control on my MG more and more... I wonder how that would work in tandem with the voice control on the EGDM... kind of like putting some focus into the depth of that good old Vox 'congestion'?

Make this the 4th knob, or actually the first!

low gain egdm would be awesome!
I also run my bjfe egdm with the drive low-ish, at 18v and then usually back off the guit vol a bit
that way I get great vox-y cleans-early breakup

I found that you had to turn up the drive past 10 or 11 to get to point where some body came in,
you know, that 3-D thing :-)

Donner, have you ever thought about putting a small toggle switch on?
That way in setting #1 it would be egdm as it is now,
and at setting #2 it would be the newer low gain profile

now that would make a most awesome pedal even more awesomer!
