Postby rockeroo » Sat Jun 16, 2012 12:04 am

Just realized I have five different bees in the house.

Take a look...

Why is the left side of the photo green?

As people get their Honey Bairs it will be interesting to see much everyone likes them, or not. I had Musicsoma's MG here when my Beeatch arrived and I felt it compared favorably and kept up nicely.

Don't you think you are putting that pink sunscreen a bit too heavy on the Bee-aby?

The HBOD on the far left looks like my early version. Is that an early serial as well?

I just got the early HBOD, and I really like the character it has. The newer BJFE HBOD (#596) has a sort of sparkle to it that the earlier HBOD does not. I enjoy the warmth the earlier Bee offers.

However, I have an interesting connection with the Beest on the left. It is one of the initial run Donner released before making the initial adjustments to the production run. It does wonders with telecasters. For some reason, it perfectly matches the character of the telecaster and provides a healthy dose of spank and warmth to the tone. Compared to the Beest on the right (the adjusted Beest), the 1st run Beest (which may have been an accidental creation in some ways) is not so much Supro as the HBOD is known to be. The production Beest has a higher gain Supro feel, but the magic with my telecaster just is not the same.

Finally, the Honey Bair is an interesting animal. I have gravitated towards a setting where the nature is below 9:00 and the treble is around 1:00. I prefer a lower drive setting on the Bair. Overall, I was very pleased with the variety of tones available I could achieve through the range of the pedal. I feel like it fit VERY nicely between my newly acquired early HBOD and the more recent production model. I could see myself selling the recent version BJFE HBOD because the Bair satisfies those tones and more. I am quite impressed my this enhanced design.

Having five bees around is probably ridiculous in many regards, but I am glad I can compare the vastly different tones between these bees. There is a slight overlap from pedal to pedal, but, for the most part, each is quite unique.

I would love to share clips with the forum at some point if I can lay them down. If I can get around to this, what amp/guitar combo would be most useful for you guys? I was thinking an old deluxe with a strat but am open to suggestions.

Cheers!

The green hue you see is what I also see in person. I was very surprised to see the difference between the early bee and my later production bee -- which is more caramel in color.

The Honey Bair is wonderful. I have not compared it with my Model G, but in my head, I imagine the Model G to be vastly difference in its richness, mid-character and harmonic complexity. While the Bair can probably keep up with the Model G as a top-notch low-gain option, I find the Bair to be distinctively HBOD in character. I really like that it covers about every HBOD-esque tone I could want.

Not sure about the intent of the sunscreen comment, but I wish I would have applied more at the lake today.

Cheers!
