Dyna Red Hot vs. Dyna Red

Postby rockeroo » Wed Feb 22, 2012 1:48 pm

I do not own a DRD, but I do have a Dyna Red Hot. I am curious how the low gain qualities of the pedals compare? Are they pretty much the same? Slight difference? Whole 'nother animal?

I would love some feedback here.

Also, how do the tone controls compare?

Cheers.

rockeroo, I have both version but haven't played them in a while because I lent them to a freidn. I should have them back by next week so will comment then.

I do remember though that the Hot's Treble knob allowed for considerably more lows when CCW. I think it not only allowed for more gain, but also for less. Soon i'll write a bit more.

Oh and congrats on the new house. It must be exciting!

cheers!

Finally got to use both and even though they share the same tonal characteristic, they are also very different to each other. I find the Dyna Red Hot to have a greater range of low gain. For example, the Dyna Red Hot with Dist. a bit past noon and Vol. at noon matches the DRD with Dist. at a bit past 9 and Vol. around 10:30.

They also differ with respect to the Treble knob. It goes considerably darker on the Dyna Red Hot when CCW. Also the Dyna Red Hot seem to be a bit more bass heavy than the DRD when both knobs are CW.

I am still unsure which one of the two pedals I like best. I enjoy the increased range of lower drive that the Dyna Red Hot has but also find the DRD amazing with the Drive at 11.

In my test, I used a LsL Saticoy with vintage style single coils and a Swart AST MKII.

Maybe somebody else can chime in later.
cheers!

Thanks for the response! What setting on the DRHD would approximate the settings of the DRD with the Tone @ 11:00 and the Dist @ 9:00?

I appreciate the help!

Cheers.

They are both similar with the following settings:

DRD DRHD
Vol. 10:30 Vol. 2:30
Treble 11 Treble a bit past 12
Dist. 9 Dist. a tad below 10

I find that they differ more and more once the Dist. goes past 11 or 12. Also the gain range of the DRHD reminds me of the gain range on the Catalinbread WIIO v.2. The gain on both pedals increase very very gradually but when near max it jumps dramatically.

Great! Thanks for the tips. I will test those settings out on the DRHD!
