.... well Im embarrassed to say I recently finally 'got' the G .....

when I first got it I was very much in low wind single coil mode ... and was merely whelmed by the G.....

Just recently broke it out again and Ive been playing Filtertrons and Hi output Rickies and minihums alot and ... what do you know ?!?!

Duh. Gibson amp sounds works much better with Gibson potency pickups ..... again DUH!

Not unlike the HBee the more you feed it the more range it has to play with and the G for me while nearly worthless with singles is just killer with at least mid level pups - P90s,Filtertrons, etc..... the N and C knobs are really versatile to for dialing it in.....

Yep, that "C" control is where the magic in the MG is, IMHO. I was diggin' my MG just last night. PH>MG is tasty!

right the Humper would give it the Gibson 'hump' to get the juicy dirt rolling ....yum.

... and really Gibson amps arent dirty at first - they stay pretty clean and its more of a tube EQ sort of warming and rounding before you strike dirt with some input ...

I had found some of those vids, but still don't feel I have a very complete sense of the Model G. Following up SteveA's early comment, would you guys say the overall gain range is in HB territory? Or significantly more gain? Do those of you who own one tend to use it more hi-gain or more lo-gain? I'm thinking of how many of us rarely turn the Model H gain up past 9 - 10:00.

"C" control? What does "C" stand for? Compression?

Also, interesting that Donner doesn't favor it with single coils - any agreement on that?

Personally, I like '50s Gibson amps with Strat or Tele, but obviously you're not going to get serious grind without a bit of boost. Still, the tone gets fat and sweet pretty easily. Depends on the amp - Gibson circuits were all over the place, compared to, say, Fenders having a pretty standard design in a given era.

I love my Model G with single coils. I have a John Mayer "The Black One" strat I sometimes play through. The Model G is a perfect combo with the neck pickup (I think it's a Big Dipper pickup).

I loved both the G's I owned, but alas, sold them to fund other gear...

I did learn a few things about them along the way and wonder if others might agree.

The "c" knob was originally thought to stand for "gibson" but according to something I read somewhere, it was actually more along the lines of tight vs loose on the OD. The thing I read said to imagine the difference between miking a speaker in the center vs off to the side. I found it had a perceived impact on the mid focus from low (perhaps loose) to higher mids (more tight).

While I loved playing it around the house, where it really blew my doors off was a gigging or loud jam setting. I found it to be strat and HB friendly. Over the last summer I sat in with a local band to cover while they tracked down a full time guy, they played a lot of american rock stuff, the model G with a strat really did Tom Petty stuff pretty convincingly. Like most of Bjorn's stuff you could also leave it on and do everything with your guitar volume.

Lastly, I really liked using it to smooth out some of my Cornish stuff... why did I sell the G again?...
