Low serial# BJF Model H issues

Postby Strat-o-lux » Thu Dec 29, 2011 10:15 am

I find myself starting to shop for a BJF Model H, now that I'm liking the BearFoot so much. If one is good two might be better, right?

I note this comment on the pedal descriptions page:

The very first Model H's had such a wide frequency response that one stage could pick up radio under certain circumstances so in later pedals BJ restricted the bandwidth at that stage.

Any of you guys have very low serial # Model H experienced problems of this sort? Anyone know exactly when this "problem" was corrected?

I will say that this is not an uncommon problem, in general, especially with fuzz pedals. I had a fuzzface once that constantly was "channeling" local radio stations. We actually used a sample of that also run through a wah and a delay, as part of a swirling psychedelic noise bed for a track we recorded back in the late '90s. Fun, fun, fun! :joker G'Luck! :salute

Thanks for the comments. I've experienced this with other pedals, notably with an otherwise wonderful vintage Colorsound wah. Realize that it's an environmental issue, but not eager to add pedals that are somehow especially prone to it.

On the other hand, this part of the pedal description: the first batch has more "klang" and headroom, is intriguing in a positive sense. I suppose I'm, in part, just going thru the process of talking myself into it, given how absurdly unnecessary a 2nd Model H is. But, it's not about necessity, is it? Part of the adventure...

... yes it never ends does it
I think the radio comment was when he was first sussing it out --- I have #0 and it doesnt ..... the exttra Klang tho is in that one and the first few, and i beleive some of them were later tamed ......... odds of you getting either are pretty slim, the first v1s are a bit stronger and of course have a different EQ than the V2s ... they all have their uses

Well I went and pulled the trigger. It's #12. Maybe some extra klang? We'll see...

I played or owned at least 5 of the early MHs and I never had issues with radio reception. I did get radio with my high gain Sunface (analog man fuzz face), but now that I think about it I haven't gotten anything since switching to EA Lyric HG cables. Could it have just been someone with a faulty cable?

Yes. My recently acquired low serial# V1 seems no noisier than the new BF version; which is to say, not noisy at all for a dirtbox with this much gain on tap.
