I definitely have run it CCW but I was running a treble booster into it.. That way I maintained the heavier dark sound I like w/ the booster helping it cut. I didn't consistently do this because w/ the booster engaged it was noisy no matter where my guitar's volume was at. This of course had nothing to do w/ the bee... it was all due to the booster going into it, which isn't around anymore (Lumpy's 73 boost). Don't get me wrong it was a KILLER stack, but noisy.

I have to agree that 10 - 11 seems to be the ideal for me. I actually have an old '50's Supro amp and the HB into a clean amp is almost indistinguishable. When compared with a regular HB, the HBdlx has much more sonic depth, although I also think that some of this may come from the internal trimmer. But when HDdlx's are compared side by side the trimmers, although at the same setting, sound different.... no two are alike it seems. To me, the added boost just sweetens the whole thing.

I do sometimes run it all the way CCW or slightly backed off. It can really thicken up a single coil sound. The HBOD is the only pedal I have found that an add this full, low end warmth and still sound natural.

Not really, but then I mostly play humbuckers...I would have to mess around with single coils and see.

The SBEQ treble knob won't fix the situation either.

Has anyone else noticed that the later BJFEs are brighter than the earliest models? I don't know if it is true, but with all the BJFEs that have run through here that seems to be the trend. Has anyone compared the earlier Dyna Reds to the later see-through DRDs? I keep staying with the EGDM as it is about the only pedal, that Bjorn makes, that I can adjust the top end and bring it down a bit.

Yep had both early and later HBOD's and DRD's and noticed the older ones were darker and looser and the newer brighter and tighter. I'd say both EQ's worked well though -- just depends on what you prefer.

Interesting. I have talked to a few others through PM on other subjects and this came up. Since Bjorn tunes each pedal, and we all tend to lose a bit of our hearing as we both age and play too loud, if the pedals are getting brighter for that reason. His tastes could be changing as well so who knows, but it has been mentioned that Leo Fender, while testing amps & speakers with Dick Dale, lost a lot of hearing due to an amp malfunction. I think that may be why the blackface amps are bright and before he died the guys at G&L had to change the specs on the pickups at the production level because Leo was tuning the pickups glass shatteringly bright just to get it to where it sounded good to him.

I might have to try out an old DRD some day because the one I have I can't kill the top end without killing the function of the pedal.

8:00-11:30 for me. And I have the older bjfe version that was darker. Generally 10:00 is perfect

Yeah, I concur on the earlier units being voiced darker from experience and from reading others accounts. Certainly the HB, DRD, and Model H are that way, and I have an earlier version of SYOD V2 in the "Gold Top" sparkle which I love, and having borrowed a later V2 from the last run of V1's and V'2's that I ended up demoing and posting:

(it's not in the Library for anyone interested) viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3346&hilit=syod+demo&start=60

and, I will say (again) that the later SYOD V2 is brighter overall as well.

Conversely, having had a few BBOD's, I will say the one I have, which is in the 400's, actually had much more gain and not nearly as bright as the others with lower serial #'s, as I can run the treble full up no sweat(and my rig overall is not overly bright, nor overly dark by any stretch).

However, I think it's much less of a hearing thing, really if at all, and more the case of Bjorn getting feedback and adjusting the EQ to address a more global appeal to have it work with more guitar/pick-up/amp rigs.

Certainly, some players will dig the darker tone of the earlier units as mentioned(my Deluxe Bee sounds fantastic and I'm playing with humbuckers w/ N at 9:30/10 most all the time), and that's the cool thing, as I've heard that many times before with other Bee owners digging the darker grunge.

Do you have to tell Bjorn about your set up or does he ask?
