have you tried to mimic it with your SBEQ with the treb/bass rolled down ?

I use my EGDM as a quasi-mid boost. It does what I would want a mid boost to do. I have mentioned this idea before. Has anyone else given it a shot? I think it works GREAT!

Cheers.

Hey Donner, could you please elaborate on this a bit? :)

Can you also explain your technique also? Do you just zero the gain and up the volume?

In my experience, you kind of have to play around with it, but you will utilize both the voice and the trimmer to achieve the desired mid-character you are going for. With different guitars and amps, you will probably get differing results. When using the EGDM for a mid boost, I have typically kept the distortion level at 9:00 or below to get where I wanted to be. You can start by turning the trimmer down to a lower setting and keeping the voice relatively high...using the volume of the EGDM to boost the lower mids. Adjusting the trimmer a little higher and decreasing the voice moves the mid boost to a higher register. A little tinkering should yield a nice result (hopefully).

I hope this description is not too vague, but I think the guitar, amp and speaker combination have a good deal to do with the effectiveness of this trick.

Cheers.

I did try and make my SBEQ do the purple humper thang by turning up the Volume @ 2, Bass @ 8, Treble @ 7 (o'clock) as well as (Volume @ 2:30, Bass @ 2 and Treble @ 9) and a few other combos. You just can't get rid of the top end with the SBEQ. Mine is # 023, so maybe the later ones do a better/different job? The good part is I did discover the joys of turning the Treble above noon, but I can't get close to the sound of the PH. I also tried in vain to get my Tube Screamer clone, The Scream (which has a ton of adjustment(s)), to get the same sound as the PH. Nothing close at all.

I also take back what I said about the 8 - 12 part of the sweep of the PH Blend knob being useless. Using my '54 thin skin Strat that has the Zexcoil Fat Vintage set traveling pickguard (Scott is doing a tour of several different models, or sets, of pickups and I just happen to have it this week) and it does work better on the 8 - 12 side as the Zexcoils have far greater output than my normal vintage style Strat, Tele and Jazzmaster pickups. BTW, I highly recommend you get on the list at TGP and try them for yourself as even this retro-grouch is really liking them! :love4

So, I was hoping maybe Bearfoot could do a run of Purple Humpers in loud purple sparkle :love10 ? I know Bjorn would have to approve it, but it seems in line with the way the BF line is laid out with BF doing the exact BJFE repro and MP doing a twist on a theme or, like the MP RRB, combining models.

I haven't tried the EGDM as a mid boost as it is my main dirt/boost with its regular sound and the PH > EGDM is eargasmic! :music

Any chance of this becoming a BF pedal Donner? I know you can approximate the PH effect using the SBEQ but that means not having the SBEQ as my actual EQ pedal. You're going to tell me to just buy two SBEQ pedals aren't you?

I love Big Muff pedals and it sounds like the PH would be fantastic with them.

After reading cajone5' review on page 10 where he said "As best I can describe it, the PH really emphasizes the low mids and lends a really aggressive grind to pedal" I'm just curious to hear from any forum people who've used the PH and a Klon. I had a JHS Klon clone and it did similar things.

Is the Purple Humper the Klon of the BJFE world?

No. The Purple Humper is not the Klon of the BJFE world. The Klon does a very specific muscular midrange hump in a pretty specific place(which cannot be dialed out btw) with a lot of volume boosting and moderate gain boosting potential. The Klon also excels at higher pushed volumes with the gain backed off and treble set to taste. The Purple Humper. does a much wider mid sweep with considerably less volume and gain boosting.(yet not an insignificant amount) For lack of a better way to describe the Klon(in a very Klonified way) adds a bigger overall sound to whatever is already going on while the PH adds wide bandwidth mids with some volume and less gain push. The PH can really bring additional agitation, grind and anger when going into OD's and Distortions via that middle EQ range.

Yeah the EQ of the Humper is different than the Klon ...

I did a huge Clean Boost comparison/ overview years ago on the MusicToyz forum - and the Klon was my favorite clean boost - very close second was the Baby Pink Booster and because of what I have learned since, the difference was the Headroom and that the Klon runs internally on 18v --- The Red Rooster Booster is probably my favorite clean boost today and running it at a higher voltage is another option ...

Really I think the SBEQ at 18v is about as good as Ill ever need and you have the EQ options ... and the 18v lifts the intentional warming ceiling on the SBEQ .

Did anyone try the Humper at higher voltage ?

No, I was afraid to blow it up! I saw in the library it can take 18 Volts. Is that correct?

I now use the SBEQ at 12 Volts for a bigger, firmer and slightly cleaner tone.
