Sooooo.... I may have just bought a Model R

Postby Joeleo » Wed Feb 23, 2011 8:41 pm

I saw that post on TGP last night and PM'd right away. Just heard back a few minutes ago that i was the first to PM him. I've sold a few things today and have a couple other things to sell to even up, but it was a very reasonable price (about the same as that PGC is going for on ebay right now with shipping). just based on clips, the Model R has always sounded more tailored to my style than any other BJFE.

I cannot wait! :pedallove

That is one pedal I have wanted to try more than any other. I have a love/hate relationship with my DRD and have wondered how the Model R would work with single coils. I went back and listened to Bobby D's videos about the Model R and I wonder how much of that technology want into the Model H as it seems smoother and richer than the DRD.

To me the DRD can sound great on rhythm but not on lead or vice versa. Even at 12 Volts it can be a bit strident with my amps for lead tone. I do have a new speaker that should be here in about a month that may help the situation, so I cant wait!

We want a full report when it arrives! Congratulations and have fun!

My developing love/hate relationship with the DRD is exactly why i'm so excited for the Model R. With my new main amp, the Nolatone CL30, the upper mid bawls of the DRD is just too much for those Celestion Blues. I can get the DRD to sound SPECTACULAR by dialing down the high end on the amp considerably, but then the other pedals don't work as well. Everything i've heard online of the Model R sounds like what would happen if you took a DRD, eq'd a big chunk out of 2.5k-4k, and lowered the drive slightly, and i think that will be just what my setup is looking for.

Congrats!!

I was super tempted on that one. The resonance control seems awesome.

Cheers!!!

If the love/hate with the DRD hits the gravity of a "break-up", let me know. I am interested in one. :)

Enjoy the Model R! I just purchased a Model H and a PPF. I will attempt some sound clips once I have them. I have heard love/hate about the H and PPF, so we will see what becomes of these 2.

Cheers!

+1 on that! Is the CL30 the Chimey Limey? My old el-84 amp hated the DRD, but the Model R seems much smoother like the new Model HvT. I have a new speaker coming in a month that will cut down my top end and have more/warmer mids and that may help my relationship with the DRD.

Yep, the chimey limey (coolest name for an amp ever :laughing7 ). I LOVE that amp. And like i said, the DRD can sound REALLY good with it, it's just that the amp needs to be set up to be darker and then the other drives don't work quite as well. That's what is so awesome about the PGC + SBEQ used as bookends: I can use them to tame the DRD or to give a little life to the other pedals when the amp is set up for the DRD.

Model R arrived today. So far i'm blown away by the sound but I'm going to give it a few days to really put it through it's paces before commenting too much. But my first impression is that this pedal fits my setup and playing style like a glove!

Also, it LOOKS sexy:
