BJFE vs. Mad Prof.

Hey all, this is probably a question that has been asked a bunch of times on here, but i'm having trouble finding the info i'm looking for. I know that Mad Professor stuff is Bjorn-designed but actually produced elsewhere. How close are the Mad Prof.'s tonally to the BJFE's? Specifically i'm wondering about similarities in the compressors and OD/dist. boxes.

Thanks!
-Joel

Hi Joeleo,

They arent intended to be similiar - they are different designs from the same person, but its not like the MP's are "cheaper versions of BJFE pedals" or something like that- they are intended for wider appeal with more rigs, and are obviously not hand made.

Now- I would say that there is not a MP pedal I havent enjoyed thus far. While they are lower in price, I wouldnt say that they have any sonic compromises at all, and cover their intended ground well.

Using an example- the HBOD vs. the SHOD. While both can do light gain applications well, they sound and feel very very different. They can be made to sound somewhat similiar, but IMO they dont overlap at all - not even close actually. Dont let the "honey" in the name fool you into thinking they are similiar pedals.

Hope this helps!
Bill

Thanks Bill, that helps alot and is very interesting info. So the Dyna Red, for example, isn't similar to the Mighty Red? I would have thought that they'd be at least in the ballpark together.

Right, While both are marshall based distortion pedals, I think the DRD = Plexi, and MRD = 80's Marshall.

There are "similar" pedals in the two lines but each is a different take on a similar application... for example:

MP Sweet Honey vs. BJFe HBOD
Both low gain overdrives but the SHOD is tight bright and modern sounding and the HBOD is darker and more vintage sounding with a tube sag feel to the drive

MP Mighty Red Dist vs. BJFe DRD
Both rock distortions. MRD is more 80's voiced Marshall distortion whereas the DRD is more classic rock 70's tone - plexi style

etc.

So similar pedals but different flavors if you will - hope this helps
