Should the SBEQ replace my current EQ pedal?

Postby jonnyrocket » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:54 am

Hi, I am currently using the Barber Barb EQ and it has been quite useful. I have a 5watt amp with a 12' speaker and one tone knob, based on 1955 Fender 5F2A Princeton. I play mainly with single coils, but use humbuckers as well. I have many od pedals and a few distortions. I would like to know if anyone here has had the chance to play through a SBEQ and a Barb EQ. I have looked online for comparison, but haven't been able to find one.

I like the Barb EQ so far, but given how impressed I was with the HBOD, i wonder if the SBEQ would also impress me and ultimately kick the Barb EQ off my board.

I look forward to hearing your comments.
cheers,
Jon

Donner,

I like to use more than one od at the same time. For example, i like to play the hotcake or the ltd into the honeybee. The Barb Eq helps me shape the tone at the end of the chain by adjusting the amount of bass, treble and mids; with my strat, i tend to lower the treble and increase the bass a bit. It has also been useful when i switch from my strat with single coils to my les paul with humbuckers.

However, I sometimes feel that the controls in the Barb Eq are very subtle, so I was wondering how they compare to the ones on the SBEQ.

Ok that helps ---- for me the sweetest thing that the SBEQ does is this sort of 'finishing' of overdrives. It integrates all the sound - a little hard to describe but kind of like the difference between looking at a pixelated picture and looking out the window --- its all there....
and the EQ bands are optimized for the guitar.

It does not have a mid control - but you can of course control mids by using the other three controls (treble and bass down and level up gives a mid boost etc...)

Good news is I bet you would really like the Hot Cake into the SBEQ ....

Bad news is you will probably soon be looking for a BJFe drive to replace that too - its a disease

Donner,

thanks for your help. It sound like i'm going to have to give the SBEQ a try.

About the hotcake, so far i have been so happy with it and the honeybee. I think they are my two favorite pedals right now. I find that each of these pedals, in conjunction with any other pedal, work miracles. I haven't tried any pedal so far that sound bad with these two.

I am dying to try more BJFE pedals and would not be surprised if one replaced the hotcake one day. Right now, I am on a quest for od's; in fact, that is how i found out about the honeybee, and for that matter about BJFE pedals. So i will look at the other od BJFE has to offer.

thanks for your advise.
Jon

Donner,

The speaker is stock (12' Eminence Blue Tick Hound). I am actually in the process of deciding which weber to get; maybe the 12F150 or 12A125s.

My amp takes the following tube configuration:
One JJ (ECC83S/12AX7)
One JJ 6V6
One NOS RCA 5Y3GT

cheers,
Jon

Thanks! Donner,

to be honest, I am still quite ignorant about most BJFE pedals so I just had to look up EGDM and learned that it is the Emerald Green Distortion Machine. Many times i feel like i am lost when reading this forum cause every pedal is referred to by its acronym. I am sure i will get the hang of it soon.

I will search for video demos of the pedal. This one is completely different to the Mad Professor Little Green Wonder right?

cheers,
Jon

Completely different to the LGW - the EGDM is more of a voxy style drive and works wonderfully as a boost... I also happen to know where you could pick one up at a very fair price :laughing7
