More TOP concerns :(

Postby The Luke » Tue Aug 03, 2010 4:49 pm

I have had my TOP since December and have pretty much set it to one sound I liked at moderate speed and never really needed to use it another way.
After getting that weird buzzing noise I highlighted in another thread, I changed my cables and re-wired my pedalboard. Still with George L's.
The buzzing went away and I couldn't make it come back. Until at practice last night it returned out of the blue. Sad times. I changed out to using non George Ls and it has happened with them. I have no idea what it could be.

So anyway, I was looking at some TOP demo videos online when I started to notice that the speed settings people have demos are a lot slower than the speeds I can get. As in my pedal set to it's slowest is faster then other demos I have heard at their slowest.
To hear what I mean, here is a quick sound clip of me plugging the TOP into Guitar Rig and playing some chords at the MINIMUM speed setting on my pedal. Mix is fully counter clockwise and resonance is at 12 o clock.
Towards the end of the clip I rotate the speed setting to max, and for the very end back to it's absolute slowest.

Is my pedal not a lot faster?

Is this odd behaviour? I think I should just look into sending the pedal back and get a replacement. Shame because it is a fantastic sounding pedal.

What makes you say that?

The sticker on the base says TOP 0404. That early?

When they first came out there were a few that had the wrong value pot on the speed control , did what yours did - easy enough fix - did you get it new or used ?

I see. At least that explains the speed thing. Doesn't explain the weird buzzing noise that randomly occurs though lol

I bought it new from Music Village here in England. http://www.dv247.com
They are an official MP dealer
How would you suggest I proceed? Seek a replacement via the shop I bought it from?

I would if they were local but that's not particularly practical with none of their stores being within a hour or two's drive. I will call them tomorrow to discuss.
Do you have any theories as to what the noise could be?

I called the shop and they are sending a courier out to collect it tomorrow.
They will then contact Mad Professor and see whether to repair or replace.

Yeah thats best - just get a new one - someone grabbed the wrong pot - it happens ....

the noise ~ well see if the new one does it .... is it just at your prcatice space ? It may be a sheilding or ground problem you are only hitting in certain places --- hard to say

They said because I have had it for 8 months they will look at repairing it first with MP and leave it up to MP whether it requires repaired or replaced.
I should probably call back tomorrow and push for a replacement.

The noise has happened in a few different rooms and the TOP is powered by a PP2+. Quite odd.
