MP LGW different chips?

Postby thesjkexperience » Tue Apr 27, 2010 7:37 pm

I found a reasonably priced LGW and saw on a Bobby D demo that you can put different chips inside to change the feel/sound. How do I find out about them and where do you get them? I will likely use it at the start of the dirt chain to both boost my other dirt, shape the upstream fuzz tone and on its own.

My first TS style pedal since 1981!

Thanks!

I am not sure. I don't even know what a stock MP LGW is supposed to have. For all I know it is perfect right now as it is supposed to be the same as the final version of the BJFE version. Minus a little Bjorn magic ;)

Any one know for sure?

I think Bobby D uses the LF353 chip in his. A good supplier would be http://www.smallbearelec.com. They have many different chips as well as pedal back plates, so that you don't have to ruin the original.

That LF353 chip is one of the best, very smooth....the other is a Burr Brown chip, the OPA2132PA...that one Rocks!!

So it sounds as though it has been established that the chip is socketed on the MP version... yes? Mine is in the studio and I never bothered to peek under the blanket.

the original 353 chip has higher headroom/ less compression as it was designed among other things to work well with the PGComp

the 272 has a bit more compression on its own and a different distortion complexity and the pedal overall is more versatile as a stand alone unit which is how it was sold - and this is before the FGC .....

you should try the MP LGW with the FGC in sustain mode 8) a sort of restacking of the original intent of separating the compression generator from the distortion generator.

 The trouble is I don't have either the FGC or the SHOD. Compression isn't my thing, but I have eyed the FGC for the sustain feature. If the LGW doesn't work out I may try the SHOD again as my setup is very different than when I tried it 6 months ago.

I did get the tracking info and my LGW should be here tomorrow. Having never used one, and not knowing what is inside the one I bought, it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Getting a new chip costs only $.45, but shipping is $5!

Well whats funny is I just put the old LGW proto (Tricolor) back on my board yesterday after a long absence and I was rather shocked at how good it sounded into the HBDeluxe - really tasty rhythym/ lead set up - as the LGW doesnt add any more compression but it pushes the HB in a good lead EQ kind of way ....

I F-i-n-a-l-l-y got the pedal today. I now lump Fed Ex in the same pot as UPS as evil doers conspiring against me getting my toys!

Anyway... I had about 2 hours to play with my LGW at moderate volume and this Wonder really puts the skirt and stockings on the other green boxes! I was rather blown away by the amount of OD in the pedal to where it is almost a distortion as some settings. The OD was far more complex and pleasing sounding than I was expecting after reading the descriptions of the LGW. I also didn't think it sounded like any of the demos I have heard except for (YouTube) Steev05 and a bit like Nick Sterling's demo.

I preferred it at 12 volts like all my BJFe except for the HBOD (which I was using at 9V tonight and it sounded great). But even at 12 volts when I used it at the end of my dirt as a solo boost I wasn't liking it.

I was pretty much set on putting it before my dirt to use as a booster, but now I am not sure what to do with it. I could actually see using my HBOD as my solo boost and my SBEQ as the dirt boost (to get a humbucker sound) leaving the LGW to do other lifting, but maybe tomorrow will yield more answers as I only got to play through the DR Z tonight and that is my hardest and brightest amp. However, I have finally found my blues jam pedal!

Where are you using your LGW?
