EGDM surprises me again

Postby thesjkexperience » Mon Apr 26, 2010 10:08 pm

One thing about Bjorn's pedals is you need to move the knobs now and again. I was switching around the order to see if anything interesting popped up. No luck, but moving things around did move the knobs slightly. I usually run the VOL -8, DIST -1 and VOICE at -9 to keep it darker for my Strats, but it did tend to be too bright on the bridge. I bumped the VOICE to 10:30 and it sounds better on all pickups and is less bright, but more even and usable! I never saw that coming!

Nice!

Im my "rediscovery" of this pedal recently, i was playing with the DIST fixed at various points, and sweeping the VOICE between full CCW, noon, CW for each DIST setting.

Totally totally not what i expected either- not only is voice certainly not your typical "tone" control that is brighter full CW, its range is different depending on DIST. This sweet spot you found with DIST -1 and VOICE 10:30.... if you decrease DIST to 11am, you'd likely need to pull back on VOICE as well.

I found full CCW and full CW were not the brightest-- there was a spot in the middle where things chimed well, and where it happened varied depending on the DIST knob position.

Im still not done experimenting with the interaction on these controls, more fun ahead for sure!!

That still is a most under-rated pedal...simply as a boost/tone enhancer it absolutely excels. I knew/heard that the minute I first plugged it in.
It pays to sit with that one and just play around with the voice knob, and REALLY listen to the MANY tone shadings to be had, and just how the mids shift around.
Do this at gig volumes to really dial it in, and BTW, I have had no problem adjusting the internal treble knob real-time to really line things up frequency-wise with my rig(of course you want to be careful not to short anything out which is why the warning is on there inside)...then the pedal just sings.
BJ packs a lot into that one for just three knobs on top...CAF, completely different animal, but again like the EGDM, that nature knob offers SO many different settings, not only depending on where it's set, but it's interactivity and response with where the fuzz knob is set...another over-looked one.
Hey, that's why I always say on these forums, type less and play more!

Is Homer at a Phish concert? lol!

Yeah, play more, think less, move those knobs and listen!

Speaking of the CAF, I am kicking myself for not picking one up when I had the chance. I am on the list for three weeks, but only Bjorn knows how long the wait will be. I know, relax, perfection takes time. 8)

I also started tipping my amps back to get the sound off of the floor and that really changes the perceived tone, so I will be playing with all the knobs again. The only one I feel I know really well is the HBOD. Got to get back and play with the DRD, MH, SBEQ and the EGDM some more.

yup and then multiply all that variety times the variety in say an HB and then again by simply changing the order and then again by tossing in an SBEQ to repurpose some of the more fringy selections possible.....

Really all anyone needs is 3 BJFs and the time to truly master them 8)

Absolutely....and yes, patience, grasshopper, Master Sensei observes wait time for CAF as large opportunity to know other "friends" much better.

I'm not a big fan of tipping the amps back as I find it hits me with way too much upper mids/treble, and because the sound is being thrown in the air, you lose a lot of stage projection but that's just physics... I use the Auralex Grammma,

http://www.auralex.com/sound_isolation_ ... gramma.asp

and find it gets the cabinet off the floor a few inches which is just enough, but more importantly it isolates the amp/cabinet from stage vibrations(monitors, subs, bass player, keys, etc) so that you keep more of your full range frequency response in tact, and not get robbed of any low end...hey, but in all honesty, whatever works.
