Klon stackin!

Postby bsic » Mon Mar 29, 2010 1:47 pm

Hey folks,

This recent GAS flare up is not showing signs of letting up.

Just sniped a Klon for $530 on the 'bay, not thinking it would even sell for that price... lately ive seen them in the low-600's. So- now where to put it in the midst of my BJFE chain... I see some older threads on stacking BJFE with the Klon.. thought Id resurrect and see if there is any recent creative uses of them with your BJFE drives.

Right now, Im thinking of replacing the solo boost at the end of my chain with it. Seems a lot of people use it to push the front end of HB's and other BJFE drives.. so if you have any thoughts on these configurations share away!

Thx,
Bill

Hi Bill,

I recently borrowed a friends Klon while he tried my TOP.
I'm not sure why, but the Klon just didn't stack well with some pedals.
As a clean boost it was fantastic, but if I pushed the drive even to 9 o'clock
it just didn't sound good. In fact even with the gain off, it still didn't sound good stacking.

I currently use a Lizard Legs Flying Dragon as a solo boost at the end of my chain.
I also use a Creation Audio Labs Mk-4:23 as the first pedal in my effects loop of my VK.
There really is nothing that does what the Klon does, but given I couldn't use it with the BJF's,
no matter where the gain was set it was disappointing.Hence it's not even on the board here.

The Flying Dragon actually leaves the amp tone as is and works well with all the BJF's.
Given that both were still cheaper than the 500 or 600 dollar Klons-
The price of the Klon for me is better spent on another BJF (imo).
Good Luck with others offering a stacking solution.

So I'm 33 and when I was in my teens and early 20's I worked for a guitar store that use to
send me and another guy to Vintage guitar show in Dallas, Vegas and other places with a bunch of guitars and a booth. I bought a Klon from the guy who makes them when they very first came out at a guitar show where he had a little booth.
I still have a picture fom like 93'94'95...not sure exactly but the Klon is on the floor. Wish I still had it.
ahhh..memories
I guess I had good taste in gear back then...Gibson ES-336 (custom shop) still my main guitar -EB volume pedal- Gold Klon- Vox wah- Vintage 70's Acetone combo rebuilt by George Alessandro. That was my 18year old rig for my fusion/funk band...simple and effective.

So, the Klon is working really well. I have it very last in my chain, replacing (maybe) my rockbox boiling point as a lead boost. Working well with my BJFE's stacked into it. Gives a great boost sound, perhaps a little to mid-heavy, but not like anything ive heard before. Does something very cool to the EQ- Im running it at the recommended gain=0 treble=noon output=11:00. I dont like it for straight rhythm playing.

Just a heads up for any others that may search for this in the future... This should hold me over until i get my hands on one of those future MP boost pedals...

if you use the Klon with the drive below 10 oclock and wish is had a hair less mids - you would enjoy a Baby Pink Booster ..... Honey Bee into a low drive Klon is very tasty as is a HBDeluxe ....

I´ve used the Klon both after and in front of a Honey Bee and a Little Green Wonder. Either way yields some nice results. Using a telecaster with fairly weak singlecoils I find that the Klon used as a clean boost before the HB or the LGW beefs everything up in a very pleasant way. However one tend to lose some of the dynamics in both the HB and the LGW using the Klon that way. It´s a choice one has to make, I guess.

Using the Klon after pedals yields some very nice results too. Everything before the Klon will however sound a bit Klonified. Not in a bad way, but different from using the pedal without the Klon after it.

It also is very fun to goose the HB with the Klon. The HB seems to be able to take everything it gets and make something nice out of it. So, even with the outputknob of the Klon at 5 o'clock and the gain at 7 o'clock the HB sounds sweet. Very aggressive, but still sweet.

Glad it works for you bsic.

I wanted it for the clean boost,
to me- the Klon was as good as it gets doing that.
Sadly, it didn't like my BJF's in my set up which goes to show as someone said
there ain't a pedal that's a silver bullet,
(and boy does this one have a stellar silver bullet reputation).
I'd still want one if I can get one of his new ones at the normal price.
Currently there are other BJF's I want more than the Klon,
but that time will come.

Cheers and Go Well.

the Klon is buffered which would mask its interaction with dynamic level sensitive pedals like most of the BJF line......

tho Klon should do really well AFTER as a boost ....

any more my favorite clean boost BEFORE drives is the MGMVibe with the amplitude down so its just an enhancer....

I actually had it after the BJF's Donner.

Didn't work for me.

I also saw that bsic was selling his Klon on TGP.
