Visual Sound One Spot PSU...safe for use with bjfe's?

Postby ptbarnum » Mon Nov 30, 2009 11:19 pm

hi gang,
just curious if the one spot has been tested as safe to use with bjfe/mp effects.
i'm tempted by its tinyness, and cheapness  .
thanks in advance.

I'm not sure one way or the other. I can say from experience that I hated the One Spot, it caused hum and excessive noise floor with my set up and two failed within a few months. What pedals will be sharing this power source? It could have an impact on the answer as delays and modulations take less kindly to sharing a power source than dirt might.

Here's something to consider, you've spent $300+ per BJF/MP and presumably you own more than one hence the need for chained supply? Why wouldn't you wish to give them the best chance to perform with clean, isolated and regulated power? The Voodoo Labs and T-Rex stuff for example, like the Fuel Tank Jnr which is reasonably priced and perfect for your needs.

If you're on a budget and need a cheaper supply, buy a regulated 9v wall-wart rated about 200-400mA and a daisy chain. I found these quieter than the One Spot and much less likely to fail.

I use a 1-Spot with my small board (Pedaltrain Mini) and it works fine, no noise. I have a couple MP pedals on there. I've been gigging with that rig for about two years. Teahead's experience surprises me; indeed, I don't know how the 1-Spot might cause noise as the power supply itself is likely to be located some distance from the board. Of course induced hum from proximity of power cables and signal-carrying patchcords is potentially a problem with any power supply.

But, Teahead raises an important issue: the 1-Spot is only appropriate if all your pedals have similar power requirements (in particular, same polarity). If you have more than 5 pedals and/or some with different power requirement, you should look into a good power supply with isolated outputs. I use a Voodoo Labs PP2 on my larger board.

Whether all BJF pedals will be happy with the 1-Spot is a different question. Data on specific power requirements of each is posted somewhere here on the forum.

yup good stuff there guys .....

I would only expand on the 1 spot for dirt only thought.....

I have used one of those for my group of drives thats on the bottom of the board and run the modulations and delay units off of the PP2 across the top .....

For single adapters Im really happy with the Line 6 adapters that came with the ToneCore pedals and these work great with delays, verbs, digital choruses etc .... that need hefty clean power to sound thier best.
