Hello

New to BJF and thrilled with what I have heard. Can some of you old time vets chime in and give me a lesson on the differences between these 2 pedals? What makes them different and what makes each great?

If you are ever interested in knowing about any BJFE pedal then here is a good place to start: BJFE Pedal Descriptions.

However, as a quick summary (and quoting my own post):

1.The BPB provides a buffered line driver and distortion-free level boost of up to 18dB. The BPB boosts just the volume and does not alter your tone, the distortion characteristics or the dynamics - what goes in is what comes out, just louder.
2. The RRB provides up to 33dB boost. It is a very high headroom booster that differs from the BPB in that it provides a lot more boost and it is meant to push an amp into distortion. On higher settings the RRB will produce some natural distortion of its own to go with the boost. The RRB has a flat EQ profile and can even be used with bass and it will not boost any treble.
3. The purpose of the LRT it to boost the treble component of the signal. Think of it as a variable "Bright" switch that is on some Fender amps.

I thought the BPB was about 6 db - it is buffered and is as good a 'more' switch as Ive found

the RRB does up the upper mids and presence range of the treble - its a wonderful lead boost for pissing off an overdrive into harmonic agression and has about the same EQ curve as a bridge P90 or Tele bridge pickup -- especially if you use mostly amp distortion - this is your lead boost

LRT is similar to the difference in the settings on a Fender Amp bright switch (actually the bright setting is straight thru - the down setting engages a cap that trims treble) - this one is really good for neck pickups - especially if you tune your amp eq to your bridge pickup and your neck pup is too dark and you never use it because of this -- the LRT brings it back to useful.... also wonderful if your honeybee is seeming a bit dark..... its a blanketlifter ....

the SBEQ is also in this family as it is sort of the RRB locked at about 1 oclock and then adding a non standard bass and treble control

its amazing how much a simple fix can make your whole rig sound right again...

I have heard that the SBEQ takes a lot of the top end off the sound, which is great for piezos...Is this the case...Does it dull the sound at all?

It can have a warming/rounding effect..... if you want clearer headroom/presence you can run it at 18v

Hey Donner,

I have a Vibro King and a spare outlet on my Pedal Power Plus 2 (as well as a spare "y "cable!!!).
I'm going to try that flavour tomorrow night!
Will it give more edge/ clarity paired with the Dyna Red??? (Which is a killer combo!)-
Re the SBEQ I think nibus said something along the lines of preferring his od/ distortion without the "warming/ rounding effect.
Would the 18v give back some of that "edge" to the distortion into a Blackface Fender/ style amp?
Can't play now as everyone's just off to bed!!!!

Hi Simon,

While almost all BJF pedals can be run on a string or from Y- cables the can't all take the same voltage and the also benefit differently from voltages. This is described elsewhere on the forum.

Oh don't run SBEQ and DRD both on 18V's
SBEQ would be fine on 18V while DRD would fry and also DRD would sound better at likely well if you have a pedal power you'll find out if you put it on the variable outlet

You once advised the DRD might produce interesting results at less than 9v-
I've never tried it over 9v and now after your reply would never attempt it!

The voltage thread has been useful and I will try the SBEQ at 18 tomorrow.
I really enjoy the EGDM at 18v. Another useful tip I think I first heard about from Newarkwilder.
Mike has become a great person to communicate with as have many other contributors to this forum.

So SBEQ is ok at 18v like the EGDM.
DRD can be "sagged" on the Pedal Power Plus 2- from 5-9v"
I might try the 5v option again!!!!! :

and be sure and try the SBEQ both in front of and after the DRD (and any other drive) .... changing the EQ pre and post can be very diferent things in distortions
