DYNA RED with acoustic guitar? better than you think ;-)

WOW.........so i started using the DRD with my new acoustic "crazy" pedalboard setup.

PGC in front, SBEQ in the read of the chain, as always.

the DRD has a sort of natural compression and dynamic "feel" to it, that sometimes was a bit too excessive with electric guitar. but as with the honeybee, once i did not have it anymore, i missed it dearly.

now i am using the DRD on acoustic, and out of ALL the various OD/distortion/fuzz pedals i have tried (and i have tried quite a few in the last month) the DRD is the CLEAR WINNER!

the compression and dynamics of the DRD really work WELL with the acoustic guitar! my solo tones with the DRD sound VERY good.....it takes some of the harsh edge off the solo tone, which most dirt pedals add when using acoustic.

i am REALLY happy that the DRD has worked out well. i also think the honeybee (which i have one on order) will also work quite well with acoustic, as there are a lot of similarities between the DRD and the Honeybee

i honestly think that my BJFe dirt pedal obsession would be COMPLETE with:

Honeybee -- Dyna Red -- Snow White Fuzz -- Baby Blue OD

i think those are my top four dirt pedals EVER, and while there may be a LITTLE bit of overlap between the BBOD and the DRD, the way i would have them set would be quite different.

Well, we're waiting for a DRD/Acoustic demo. I think you need to add a PPF. Bjorn has specifically recommended that combo.

I'm curious how you think the HB and SHOD compare. I find I prefer the SHOD for most stuff - to the point where I'm contemplating ordering a 2nd one so I can keep one on both pedalboards. That's not to say I don't like the HB. I find them quite different, so perhaps it's a pointless comparison.

yes......and the gearmanndude shootout between the HB and SHOD is about useless

HB i find to be more dynamic and subtle, and i think would work better for acoustic guitar. it also does the absolute BEST rhythm guitar sound i have ever heard from ANY pedal. that jangly, tom petty/REM/byrds/americana kind of guitar sound is RIGHT THERE in the pedal.

SHOD is a great pedal AS WELL, it's just completely different. it is like a bigger, bolder tube screamer, but with more highs and bass, and the focus allows you to dial in where the overdrive affects the midrange frequencies (at least to my ears)

but if you LOVE the SHOD......i would say YES -- get another one. it's a great pedal!

gonna do some acoustic demos of my pedalboard madness soon

Interesting how subjective this stuff is. I'd actually characterize the SHOD as more dynamic, but certainly less "subtle" than the HB. Don't see a similarity between SHOD and Tubescreamer. But, no wish to argue, just interesting how subjective these impressions. I'd bet that a significant factor in differing assessment is amps and pickups. My feeling is the SHOD is particularly congenial to the Blackface Fender amps I primarily gig with; my Strat pickups are "vintage" style of fairly modest output.

Haven't tried these with acoustic, so I can't comment on this brave new world you're exploring. Eager to hear your next acoustic demos.

Still think you need a PPF.

yes......PPF is one of the only ones i have never tried, and i would REALLY like to give one a demo sometime

the SHOD is indeed NOT a tubescreamer........what i was trying to say is that it is an overdrive that would appeal to someone who likes tubescreamers, but is tired of the tubescreamer sound. it would easily REPLACE a tubescreamer for someone 8)

the honeybee does reel more dynamic to ME than the SHOD, as the SHOD feels a bit tighter and stiffer. the comparison of Honeybee being a ragged old tweed amp, and the SHOD being a nice, recently serviced Super Reverb is pretty accurate.

for me, i think the combo of Honeybee/Dyna Red/Snow White Fuzz is gonna be my main three dirt pedals. with the PGC in front to boost them, and the SBEQ at the end to do the final EQ and boost. that is my personal tone nirvana

oh yes....and maybe a Baby Blue Overdrive, if i ever get lucky enough to snag one. and maybe a SParkling Yellow....and a Candy Apple fuzz.....and a PPF.....

Hey Bobby D.
That acoustic pedalboard demo is gonna'really be interesting.
I just got rid of my Maxon-Ph-350, and my SHOD to help purchae my PA.
I also have a Boomerang III on the way specifically for the acoustic shows.
I still have the KOTV4 and you know what?
I WISH that sold before the SHOD.
The moment it went out the front door I was a broken man, but the Bose PA and the Boomerang which I'll be gigging with meant A LOT of things had to go.
timmy goes this afternoon.
of the KOT and the SHOD, the SHOD is probably more useful to me than the Hi Gain KOT.
I think the SHOD is exactly as you described it.

My essential BJF's are pretty similar to yours and the order is:
HB; (equal second can't separate-PGC; SBEQ); EGDM; DRD;

I am still waiting on a Model H and one day, there will DEFINITELY be a SHOD back on the board.
Love the most recent clips too especially the hat!!!!!!!!
I was waiting to see the Professor, Gilligan at and the whole crew in the background.
If Mr. Juhl somehow ended up on Gilligan's Island, I'm sure the Professor could power his pedals somehow.
I used to love that they could cook coconut cream pies but not fix a hole in a boat.
The batteries on the radio never ran out either!!!!!

thanks simon!

i am having a LOT of fun with my acoustic gigs. there are dozens of guys who play acoustic down there, and we have plenty more who come from all over the world to play during high tourist season. so it's a very competitive place to be as a musician.

luckily, i am the FIRST guy to ever do anything like this down there, and it's really helping me to separate me from "the pack" of other acoustic guys and gals.

i am VERY lucky that a friend is sending me the CANDY APPLE FUZZ, which is another pedal that due to the nature of it i think will work REALLY well with acoustic. people LOVE IT when i get all crazy and do some hendrix with acoustic guitar, and make it feed back and fuzz out like on "Foxy Lady"

and i don't do it ALL the time. much of the time, i am sitting on a stool, chilling, playing nice singer songwriter type stuff.

but when the crowd is ready to ROCK, i can stand up, make some loops with my line 6 DL-4, and then hit some dirt pedals and start wailing away. 8)

i can't wait to do some video demos of this setup. my sound engineer guy just bought the new Zoom Q3 digital audio and video recorder, and this unit seems PERFECT for recording demos, it has high quality stereo condensor mics, and also shoots good video, so i will get him to come to my show and record some of this madness.

so then you all will believe me

very very very happy right now. it's one of those times when you can FEEL that you are going the "right" direction, things are falling into place, and the tide is turning. my shows are going great, i just last week got a GIG that i have been trying to get for THREE YEARS, which will be another one of those gigs that i will be able to play for YEARS.

things are finally looking up, after a long year of uncertainty and financial hardship. i wanna thank all you guys for putting up with me over the last year

but my video demos were the big bright spot during that past year, and support from LOTS of members here, as well as Donner and Bjorn, has really helped me to make it thru. i love you all :D

aha......i forgot to add, i am using the TINY ORANGE PHASER with acoustic as well!

while chorus on acoustic is always very nice, it is a bit subtle, and i wanted something that would get a bit BIGGER and less subtle than a chorus.

the tiny orange sounds GREAT. i can see the response in the audience when i use it. it really sounds GOOD with the acoustic, especially when you are using some dirt pedals. it's VERY cool.

now that i am using phaser, i am thinking about working up the van halen classic "eruption".....on acoustic guitar.

THAT ONE will put some money in the tip jar

i am having a LOVE affair with the DRD....which was the first BJF pedal i fell in love with.

i am falling in love ALL OVER AGAIN.

the EGDM was the first BJF pedal i ever bought (got it for $75 used in a music store), but i never really bonded with that one. bought a second one, and didn't bond with that one either. but i love they way they sound when OTHER people are using them....hmmmm.....

anyhow, just filmed a DRD demo. i realized that i had never done a video demo of the DRD by itself.

i really love how you can crank the gain DOWN, and ALMOST get a Baby Blue sort of OD from the DRD.

but all the FUN happens when you crank the GAIN UP!

i love this pedal....and the honeybee.....and the snow white and candy apple fuzzes -- with those pedals, i have more than enough dirt to make me happy

Ha!!!!! I gotta laugh Bobby,

Same for me........interesting how we were both moving from the DRD to the H and BOTH went full circle.
now it's a Dr. Phil for me. What was I thinking???????
I've seen alot of guys saying they sold their DRD to get a Model H. I'm TRULY glad I didn't listen too hard.
It was nibus that got me using the DRD that way. Gain bearly on....gets some nice things happening.
Is the Sweet Honey still a main player for you? (ps- have you tried the KOT? as I think there are similarities...I just like the way the Sweet Honey is really tight in the bass response and has mild to more gain than I actually imagined when I first got it. (Now it's gone........sob sniff a moment please....)
I still want the H badly, but nothing says Marshall through a Fender Blackface like the DRD.
Over used cliche' but I tried the Box of Rock, the OCD, and the DRD is just a Marshall amp in a box. Done.
