SHOD, HBO comparison

Postby Strat-o-lux » Wed Jun 03, 2009 10:23 am

Any chance someone out there could, would, record some comparative sound clips so that newbies like me can hear the difference between a SHOD and HBO played side by side thru the same rig? Having become infatuated with my new SHOD I am, of course, wondering if I need an HBO as well. I imagine I'm not the only new SHOD owner who would be much appreciative if someone is willing to undertake this task.

Or has this already been done and I've failed to find it?

Well, there goes a few more hundred $$ from my poor starved bank account. Thanks a lot, guys.

Lars, nice job on the sound clips. Exactly the sort of comparison I was hoping for, covering a range of playing styles. Sounds as though, like me, you've spent a fair amount of time de-coding Jimi.

Cheers!

My SHOD arrived today and I have just spent an hour or so playing it next to a honeybee. It is very different but with some similarities. The honeybee is softer, fuller and rounder IMO. More honey. The SHOD is brighter with tighter bass. They are both very dynamic but I find the Honeybee to be more so, more sensitive and more 'amp like'. They are both great stackers. Leaning towards keeping the honeybee but I need more time to decide. Would be very naughty to keep both....

I borrowed a HB from a friend the other day and today I´ve run the HB side by side with the SHOD.

The HB is the pedal that has the strongest "personality" as the SHOD is more transparent.
The SHOD is more "in your face" (in a good way!) while the HB is a bit softer sounding.
The BH sounds thicker and has more low end (I have the nature set at noon) whilst the SHOD is more focused.

Gainwise I suppose that the SHOD has more gain on tap, but as I run the focus knob at about 9 o´clock I´m not using its entire range of overdrive.

On my board the SHOD is located in between my Timmy* and the HB and that´s a good way to desribe its tone: Something in between a Timmy and a Honey Bee! BUT, the SHOD is more dynamic!

I´m really happy with my SHOD, but I might buy a HB as well 8)
(I prefer the HB with clean amps with lots of headroom, like my 50W/EL34 Hiwatt style head, and the SHOD with amps that compress a bit more, like my 30W/EL84-combo.)

* Björn gave me an OP275 IC that I´m using in my Timmy and it´s the best one this far. (I´ve previously used LM1458, OPA2604 and TL072)

Thanks for the comparisons...I need to take the BJFE plunge.
Leaning towards the honeybee at this point, but the SHOD is tempting.
