Little Green Wonder BJFE vs MP?

Postby mudster » Thu Feb 19, 2009 5:47 pm

Hello and greeting from Kansas. This is actually my first post here!

I was wondering if anyone has compared the BJFE Little Green Wonder and the Mad Professor equivalent? Is there an audible difference (to people other than Eric Johnson)?
Would it be worth seeking out a used LGW rather than buying the MP version?

From one of BJ's comments I saw in the FAQ or somewhere on the site, it appears there was more than one version of the BJFE LGW. Any comments welcome.

I play into either divided by 13 amps (moderately clean amps) or an old Vox (lots of grind), and I don't like that many overdrives on the market. I prefer the old TS9 or the small box Rat. I don't like super transparency in an OD, nor extreme metal-shred distortion. I dig a singing, vocal-like, Jeff Beckish tone. I also dig Terje Rypdal's tone.
Also a big fan of Rory Gallagher's tone.

I'm open to recommendations on other BJFE pedals. I've got a Honey Bee on order.

Glad to meet ya'll.

Hello and welcome! I used to have both. There wasn't any real difference in my opinion. The BJFe version allows you to switch chips, not sure if the MP version does. Hope that helps.

Bobbie had both - I asked him the same question, and he told me the MP version is about 99% of the BJF version... maybe closer.

They're identical circuits. Though you have to wonder if Bjorn's magical mojo dust does make the BJF version sound better, because everything he makes sounds so good.

yeah the LGW is the one you can chip swap in -- so get one of each and you can set them up a little differnt

sounds like you should try the Dyna Red too ... or the MP Mighty Red for the singing lead sounds...... 8)

Hi!

I have heard some old Bjfe LGW and they have a little mellower
than the later ones...
The MP version got a chip that got a little bit more gain and sounds a little bit different than the original Bjfe chip
when I have compared...
You can also change the chip in the MP version.
And then it will sound just the same...

I Prefer the original Bjfe chip anyway :-)

i noticed this as well......i liked the sound of the earlier chip too. and thankfully since the chip is socketed, it is easily swapped out 8)

I traded my BJFe LGW since I already got a used MP LGW (for $200)..

I noticed no timbral differences really.. They sounded like the same pedal.. the MP felt more rugged... i prefer not having to worry about chipping and/or scratching the paint.

(I traded the BJFe LGW for a mint Way Huge Red Llama, that i am not bonding with yet..)
