Dyna Red --- Gain on 8:00 = WOW [with clips!]

Postby nibus » Sun Feb 15, 2009 1:40 am

Hey guys, so I was playing around with my Dyna Red today with my strat, and just for fun set the gain all the way off.

Then I turned the treble up to about 2:00, and bumped the volume up a bit. Wow!! Awesome "edge of breakup" sound. I actually A/B'ed it next to one of my Timmy's, and it is definitely a contender. Not as transparent or EQ'able, but it has it's own warmth that the Timmy doesn't have.

Does anyone use their Dyna Red for this?

Mine may sound different at low gain because it's a tweaked version, but I assume the regular version would sound very similar?

Here's a clip I did just going through the paces on my Strat. I actually didn't stumble on the best low gain sound (treble up) until after I recorded this... and it's too late to go record it now.

BUT, I'll record something tomorrow with it at low gain and the Treble tweaked. In the meantime, here's a comprehensive:

MP FGC (sometimes) > Dyna Red > Hardwire DL-8 > Traynor YCV40
(Lower gain sounds at about 6:20)

Oh, and excuse the crappy playing!! I kind of just played whatever came to my mind... and it shows.

very cool sounds, thx for sharing.
on some gigs thats exactly the way i use my DRD. i stack the BBOD into it for glorious leads.
still, it is a pretty warm sound...if i need a low gain sound with more sizzle, i use a HAO rust booster. but it will most likely be replaced with the new amber drive.

Great stuff! Thanks for the clip. Makes me lust for a Dyna Red. What pickups are on the strat?

It's loaded with Duncan SSL's. pretty low output, vintage style pickups.

i do the same thing.....i like the DRD with the gain almost all the way OFF. it actually becomes more of a light overdrive, and i was able to A/B it with a beautiful BBOD, and got CLOSE to the BBOD sound with the DRD.

even with all the BJF i have played, the DRD continues to amaze me, and is one of those pedals that i think i will keep for life.

and when you crank the gain UP....well......it makes me feel like i have long hair and tight pants again 8)

yeah I believe BJ actually designed it for the lower drive setting thats there - what most of us use it for is just that low sound crrrrrranked 8)

I like using t he BBOD and DRD both on low drive and stacked , you can mix up some gooduns just by tweeking the drive knobs as they a re EQd differently ...

on this ambient guitar thing i did, the DRD was on the WHOLE time....it was set to a minimum of gain, and it just added a LITTLE edge and sparkle. and then of course liberal helpings of delay and phase and more delays and loops....

the DRD goes a LOT of places. and in combination with the BBOD, it's a pretty mighty duo. TWO baby blues on ebay right now......wonder how high they will go? :?

Has anyone stacked the DRD with a HBOD? I have these 2 pedals sitting next to each other on my board (just got the Dyna in yesterday) but the only problem is I'm ampless at the moment, just waiting on a speaker to get here.

hey Cardinal.
for two years straight i used exactly that combination.
DRD into HB. i was the happiest guitarist on earth and i just should've stuck to it, there was nothing left to ask for.
but then i scored a LGW and BBOD and a KOT and started to switch around ....and around.
an example of that sound can be heard on this crappy youtube clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpnh2Ulz_yw
i used HB and later in 2nd solo added the DRD. amp was a peavey van halen that night, hehe. different backline amps every nite :D
and this one, theme is HB, solo is DRD into HB (into a Crate amp i believe...)
