BJ's recommended starting points

My FenderVK can be a LOUD amp.

Mr.Juhl always suggests good starting points to begin setting all the knobs with as a guide.

Am I losing tonal quality or dynamics if I set the volume knob on the pedal: e.g. the EGDM

below the unity volume of the amp?

I ask as I know on all my BJFE pedals,

the interactivity of the other knobs can yield a vast array of tonal possibilites. (eg my HB,EGDM and PGC).

Is it a negative or bad affect on the performance of the pedal to do this?

Forgive the basic question....any help????????

Next addition will be the Sea Blue eq.

no question is "basic" or "stupid"

the fender Vibro King is a VERY good amplifier. It is also a VERY LOUD amp.

personally, if I were to use one with my BJF/MP pedals, I would set it to a good stage volume "clean".

then, i would adjust the output levels of each pedal to taste, maybe a little boost for some....

adjust gains and tone controls, etc.

SBEQ will make EVERYTHING even better. and give you a MASTER CONTROL PANEL at the end of your chain for final equalization, as well as a "master volume" for your pedal chain.

Thanks for the help and making me feel ok about asking.

I asked because setting the volume knob on the EGDM to unity-

then adding gain can have the amp ROARING above unity,

and then I HAVE to back the volume off........OFTEN way below Mr. Juhls suggested starting point.

So your advice has affirmed that this is normal and won't cause degradation of tonal quality.

Simon -- one of BJ's most endearing and interesting qualities as a pedal builder and designer is that he uses his pedals as "spies" so he can hear a wide variety of players, amps and guitars all using his stuff.

the vibroking is one of the BEST modern fender amps ever made, in my opinion.

it is an unusual beast, as is his brother, the tonemaster head. both amps are VERY VERY good.

"suggested settings" are just that.........suggestions. YOUR EARS will tell you what sounds good and what does not.

and BJ loves to hear this sort of feedback from players, so NEVER feel that you are asking a "stupid" question. ANY question is a good one. and there are a LOT of wonderful people here on the forum with a wealth of knowledge to help out. i just happen to be online a lot these days, but will be back on tour soon and will be offline for a month or so.....

with the Vibroking, from my experience using those, I would think that amp would REALLY love a Little Green Wonder or a Dyna Red distortion

I appreciate your feedback. Interestingly the Dyna Red was my second BJFE pedal. (First was the PGC).

I LOVED it,but found 'I' had trouble with tweaking the bass response. I also found this with the BOR that I tried after the Dyna Red.

I wonder if that was premature-

Perhaps if I had of started with the Sea Blue eq, I might have better refined the Dyna Red for the VK.

I know Doc Rock actually changed from An Eternity to the Dyna Red.

He pointed out quite correctly that the Dyna Red has WAY more gain but is ALOT quieter.

I did his recommended test-
simply turn the pedal on.............. without playing!!!!!

- The E was breathing way louder, almost hissy by comparison.

Somehow- I don't think that I could manage that trade these days of an Eternity for a Dyna Red!

The word on Mr. Juhl's stuff is well on the streets, on pedalboards and through amps!!!!!!!

Thanks for your "warning" re the satellite chip in all the BJE and MP pedals.......

Now I'm wondering if it will be Sea Blue

and a revisit to the Dyna Red???????

i have never heard any unhappiness with an SBEQ owner. it will help "tame" your amp, or it can hhelp push it over the edge. it can also make a piezo-electric acoustic guitar sound more warm and natural.

i would be very interested in hearing the SBEQ and Dyna Red OR the Little Green Wonder in conjunction with the Vibroking.....

OR.....



maybe the SBEQ may help you to tame the EGDM and make it work better with your amp???? hmmmm....

That's the way I'm heading Slim!!!!!

also as well as CS '56 Strat and a Custom Shop '57 tele,

I play a Godin LGX-SA, (my I wish I had a Les Paul guitar).

That has an LR Baggs piezo under the saddle as part of a 3 voice guitar.

It's not a Martin or a Gibson acoustic, BUT

for some gigs it will be my just take one guitar and the acoustic trough a PA is fine.

With a Sea Blue eq I think it will upgrade to:

mighty or damn fine!!!!!!

Good point about EGDM as well.

there was a great thread on the forum called Sea Blue eq Pedal of the Year,

that supports exactly what you're saying about the Sea Blue eq, with the LGW and as a tamer/ shaper.

My Christmas pedal present to myself I think!!!!!!

Just to clarify, I never did own an Eternity ... I simply played Donner's and had made that observation when I compared it to my Dyna Red.

I didn't relaize it was DonneR's "E" you were referring to.....

All the same....the test is a great indicator and one I have adopted with all pedals

new or road testing!!!!!!!!!

I came on board last year, but do more reading than posting.......

You might be relieved to hear knowing my penchant for 'brevity'..........................NOT!!!!!

He also got my interest in BJFE with the Dyna Red I think(????)

Then I actually went from a Keeley Compressor- to an Analogman Juicer (still have that on the board),

then to an AYA R-Comp looking for sustain and less compressor 'squish" as well as alot of it.....the AYA was REALLY GOOD,

then

Heard LV and others RAVE about the PGC.......game over.

PGC
then HB
then EGDM
next Sea Blue eq
pending divorce...........and possibly back to the Dyna Red..............
