Sea Blue EQ Pedal of the Year!

I think it's just due to their availability...I know Custom Sounds had some in stock last week, and they pop up for sale pretty regularly. I think part of it is also due to the fact that it's a "mere" EQ pedal rather than a screaming distortion (Dyna Red) or howlin' OD (Honey Bee); the difference in tone quite a bit subtler. That said, there ain't NOTHIN' like a SBEQ at the end of my chain to sweeten up the tone.

Can't believe one sold on ebay recently for 285 after a BIN price went from 325 down to 305 U.S.

That's just nuts. Some people are really marking up 2nd hand PGC's and HB's,

and I've seen 2 or 3 SBEQ's on on TGP and ebay recently that to my surprise were there

a while with trade offers/ price drops etc.

Is it indicative of the econmies all over,

or is the SBEQ a more specific/ taste/ application of the BJFE line?

Any thoughts on why many good things are moving slowly @ the moment

SBEQ's have always been available used in the $275 - $325 range. Like thisfire said, they are more readily available (supply) and as cool as they are, most people would buy a great dirt pedal before they'd buy a great EQ.

Yes actually one often overlooked use for the SBEQ is as a lead booster ...

if you turn the bass and treble down most of the way - its a mid boost , and then you can trim it with t he T/B controls

I like to turn the T and B all t he way down then bump the treble back up a bit and set t he volume for a bit of boost and this is a great goose for a drive like the DRD etc...

or use t he same seting AFTER your distortion pedal and it reshapes it nicely....


So yeah I like an SBEQ up front for a lead/ chunk boost and one at the End as the liason between my board and amp.

An aside,
Mr. Gilmour supposedly sandwiches much of his dirt with EQs..
But given his eq fetish, he uses a little brigade of GE-7's i believe.

besides SBEQ i have a few other Boss EQs myself:

1 x PQ-4 Parametric EQ
2 x GE-7, Graphic EQs, 1 modded by Analogman
2 x EQ-20, the second i intend to have modded by analogman to sequence among the EQ settings.. probably as a 1-trick pony.

I don't foresee having a brigade of SB's but i'd like to use these where they perform best.
i know these are different types.... but

what's the smartest way to use these pedals, if at all, when one has 1 SBEQ?

Yeah really with a good distortion and an EQ before and after you could make about any drive sound you could think of..............


And since you mentioned Gilmour (a personal top 5) he and Eric Johnson are where I got t hat idea......


I went to see Eric johnson at a place where I could walk right up to the stage and see his pedalboard ( and I even touched his fuzzy thingy )

and I noticed that the Tube Driver that everyone talked about was set oddly, the treble a nd bass controls were most of the way down and the gain level was even down a bit, which made no sense ......
until I went home and put t he same setting on my SBEQ and Tube Driver and played my Strat up above the 10th fret and there was the sound --- its reshaping the strat bridge pickup and ten when you run that into a screaming amp ---- ding! Hes using it as a tube EQ.

And I get closest to Gilmours singing tones with a Rat and a EQ instead of a muff ...............





with your set up I would use the Parametric as the mid bumping lead boosts and the Graphics as over all shapers.................

And one very important trick I learned from BJ about EQ is that often the best way to get clearer treble is not to increase treble, but to reduce the correct bass frequencies.... removing the mud is often the best way to increase clarity.

depends on what you want it to do......

18v gives more headroom and clarity..........

one part of the SBEQs sounds is t hat slight tubish warming that I think you will see more of at 9v

so its another option to keep in mind.

Ha well I dont know about that, but EQs are probably the most versatile tone shaping tool you have and also probably the most underused and misunderstood ones as well .....

Do yourself a favor and really spend some time with an EQ in all the places it will go .....

BIG difference between adding bass before and after distortion simply because of the way harmonics are formed and stacked ....

Yeah I mostly just paint for the BJF customshop and the Fraternities Im doing now ........ I do some other stuff sometimes -- Im doing a Skreddy box att he moment....
