I haven't had the pleasure of playing a CAF, but my DRD and EGDM aren't going anywhere!

well, since many of us are on an eternal tone-quest, I am trying to find that sound that is in my head. Something dynamic, juicy, and controllable, that sounds good at both bedroom levels and onstage, and can go from crappy rented backline red knob Twins and Hot Rod Devilles to nice boutique amps like my Soldano or the trusty old JCM 800 2204 50 watt head.

And hopefully I can share some of my results here ith the community.

first impressions of the CAF at bedroom levels with my practice amp:

A very dynamic and "singing" fuzz.

I use LOW output single coil pickups -- Dimarzio HS-3 models -- in a vintage but highly modified 69 strat (not a relic, the real thing)

my pickups are not strong enough to drive the CAF into the craziness that I know it is capable of -- which is fine with me -- i may put a booster in front of it if I want to get CRAZY

Nature knobs is VERY cool....makes some funny noises when turned, ala the zvex "crackle OK" knob on the SHO.

It is on my pedalboard, and it going to the gig TONIGHT.

and it has that BRIGHT BLUE LED light that my MXR Carbon Copy has -- so now there are THREE of those bright blue lights on my board. those things are bright enough to land a plane with!

This is one of the best fuzzes I have heard. I need to open it up to see what art is on the inside!

and upon opening the back, i discovered it is CAF #84, so I guess it is very recent.

fuzz -- wolf tones -- makes sense to me.


I already love this pedal. The fumes from the finish are still pretty strong, though....I could probably get a buzz by sniffing it.

But it already makes me HIGH when I plug it into my amp!

OK, gig report

I pared my board for the weekend down to:

chain goes>>> Boss T-Wah (to be replaced by MP SWAW - clips sound TEN TIMES better than this pedal)

Soldano Reverb o Sonic with Soldano branded Eminence 2x12 speakers

69 strat with HS-3 pickups




First thing I liked about this fuzz is what I call the "stringy" quality -- it really allowed me to hear the strings of my guitar very clearly. It's hard to put into words what I mean, but I hear a lot of "stringiness", which I hear in other players I like...such as Mike Landau.

I didn't use ANY other dirt pedals, which was a bit lazy of me -- but I wanted to force myself to use it a LOT.

Into the Soldano's "crunch" channel, which was set with preamp gain at 7, I used the CAF as a nice boost and fuzz.

I was initially a bit worried when I read other reviews and info on the web about the pedal, because it sounded like it might be a bit wilder than I'd like. But since I use low output pickups, I don't think my signal drives it nearly as hard as a guitar wit humbuckers, or even hot singles like the Suhrs or Texas Specials, etc.

I really dug the fuzz, and it has that "musical" quality that many fuzzes lack. I find this quality also in Skreddy pedals...hard to explain, but it's there.

I will like this even better when I stack it with other drives. I think the combo of CAF>>>EGDM>>>>DRD is going to be AWESOME for me. If I don't bond with the EGDM, I will try to HB or BBOD instead.

I think all of my dirt is going to end up BJFe and Skreddy. And hopefully my wah too -- I'm tired of using wah pedals, and prefer the autowah.

Great feedback on the CAF - sounds very cool, and damn it I missed out on a couple of CAFs way back when.

Man, you're going to be on BJF overload when those others get there! Maybe you better book a couple of days off work.

ahhhh.......I love my mail carrier -- she always brings me great stuff

I will be spending some quality time with THIS today.

Hopefully EGDM tomorrow or Wednesday.

and then a VERY important gig on Thursday -- I am doing as gig as "me" instead of just playing with a band -- so the pedals are goin gto be on my board for a gig that might make a lot of difference in my music career in the future.

OK.....quick "bedroom" evaluation of the DRD.

I was exactly what I was expecting, and I like it a lot. A nice, high gain distortion pedal dripping with tone.

This replaced a Fulltone OCD-- which is a great pedal -- but did not have enough gain for me. I wanted something that would sound nice full and gainy WITHOUT boosting or stacking it. I wanted a pedal that would stand and deliver all alone -- and the DRD delivers!

I did get to stack the CAF and DRD, and that was cool.

The DRD seemed to REALLY like my old TC Booster/Line Driver/Distortion pedal as a boost. THAT combo sounded REALLY good.
