hi everybody.

everyone seems to agree that the HB works excellent with other pedals in front of it, and that'S the way i use it all the time: with a DR distortion in front. nice combo.
I like the DR sound though, when dist. is just cranked a little - sounds almost like Roger Mayer's Voodoo 1, a nice crunchy tone...especially with my Cowtipper amp which has quite some mids, it balances these out nicely. so it would be cool to use the DR as a basic crunchy sound, which is how i used the HB.
I thought about putting the HB in front to push THAT sound, but everything on my pedalboard is velcro-ized neatly and "connected for life" - so before i tear it apart i'd like to ask: has anybody had experience with boosting other pedals with the HB? maybe even in that order: HB > DR ?

and: any suggestions stacking the EGDM? seems to work best on it's own is my impression so far....

thanks!

Hi,

Welcome to the forum!

Consider this: when stacking these pedals, the idea is that the one that comes last before your amp will have the most dominant character, while retaining flavors and feelings of the one(s) you put before it. So if you put your HBOD last in the chain, then you will still have the overall sonic footprint of your HBOD, seasoned with whatever you feed into it. You could use either drive pedal (DRD or EGDM) to drive your HBOD even further. What you will likely get is a sound "shaped" similar to the HBOD by itself, but with more gain and compression. But the sound will still have much of the basic "shape" of the HBOD.

If you try the reverse, say with the DRD, you can set the DRD to the nice crunch tone you like. If you would like "more" of that, then you can use HBOD to thicken the gain even more, while still retaining much of the basic character of the DRD.

It helps if you think of these pedals as little "pre-amps" and "power-amps," the same way you would think of gain stages in your amplifier.

It also helps to know what kind of guitars and amps you use, and to what sonic objective.

With a cleaner amp, it would be my personal preference to run:

Guitar > HBOD > EGDM > DRD > Amp,

because then you are increasing the order of magnitude of distortion capabilities as you approach the input of your amplifier. With DRD being the highest gain of the bunch, you can run that by itself. Or you can set things really low on it, then add flavors of HBOD and/or EGDM into DRD on its way to your amp. Overdrive (LGW, HBOD, etc.) > DRD is a particularly ferocious guitar hero sound.

But running things backwards from what I just described will also produce unique and fun sounds in their own right. It's a question of personal preference, and my thought is that you are going to need to tear apart your board and play around with all possible combinations and use your ears to find what will most inspiring to you.

Have fun!!!

Hi Doc.
thanks for the advice...I tried different things today with some good results!
i set up as follows now:
DRD > EGDM > HB
feeding the DRD into the EGDM gives a pretty wacked out sound!! it's what You could call a "meltdown" sound, like the amp is about to blow up. very nice.
however I found it less satisfactory to put HB in front of DRD, so I keep it the other way around, like I used to. and the EGDM into HB is a less fat, less compressed sound than with the DRD....so i got lots of cool combinations now to chose from.

thanks again and take care!

Right on, happy to help. The nice thing about the BJF stuff is that there are so many possibilities! Glad you found some combinations that worked so well for you.

Another really fun trick is to hit the front end of one of your OD's or distortions with a clean boost such as RRB. You can set the drive pedal for a solid crunch tone and then launch it into the stratosphere with RRB. It will yield a texture different from combining drives.

It's all about choices and possibilities, and the various BJF products offer those in spades.

Cheers,

Doc :D

IVe been working with the HB as a gooser lately and it helps alot to turn down the bass bump or bring the nature back up towards noon , that bump can mush up some drives depending on how they generate thier distortion....

Hi,

Well I know one guitarist that runs the HB as prebooster to DRD- at the time of design of HB I found it was the only pedal I could run as prebooster to BBOD.......

Yes HB works nicely as an OD but much of its dynamic qualities are then lost but thickness added

Have fun

I'm currently running my OD pedals:

Lovepedal E (sunburst) -> EGDM -> DRD.

I'm using the E and EGDM stack for high gain leads. My DRD is used mainly for crunchy rhythm tones.

What about the rest? How do you folks stack your EGDM?
