Those Who Love The VCF?

Or indeed the Snow White Auto Wah...

Yesterday I got a ZVex Wah Probe and it reminds me so much of the VCF sound, obviously with a probe control rather than voltage. Hopefully I'll record some clips to illustrate this point soon, but I just wanted to share for anyone who loves the tone of the VCF/SWAW pedals.

Suppose I can elaborate having used it for rehearsals today. With the correct footwork you can get some extremely funky filter sounds, quite unlike any wah I've ever played. It's a very wet and wide sweep, perhaps more harsh that the VCF at the top of it's range and certainly a little noisier, but it definitely shares that tubey, hollow low end and midrange.

If you love the sound of the VCF I'm pretty certain you will love the Wah Probe's tones, whether you want to control that sound with your foot or pick attack is a deciding factor of course, each has it's own merits. I've been a Teese user for years, never completely in love with their tones. My VCF gave me the filter sounds I dreamed of, but I just couldn't deal with the voltage controlled effect, feeling it restricted me somehow, I returned that pedal to Bjorn and mourned the loss of that sound.

Now the Wah Probe has come along and delivered that sound within a squeeze of my big toe, which is literally how you can affect the sweep. Why I didn't try the ZVex sooner is just beyond me, sorry if this has been little more than a gushing rant to you, perhaps to make it more topical, I do enjoy stacking it into my PGC and MGMV an awful lot! :D

I also have a Zvex Wah Probe and can attest to the awesome sound it creates. I replaced my Fulltone Wah and have never looked back. That being said, I am going to replace it wth the SWAW on my pedal board. I am not much of a fan of having to use my foot to manipulate the sweep. I may keep the probe for recording in pro tools. It is VERY cool how you can use your fingers and do like a wave and get some CRAZY sweeping/pulsating sounds. I think it would be cool to use the probe on vocals in post production in Pro Tools.

Another Wah Probe lover here. Really need to get a power plate. This thing can drain a battery in a day or two if you leave it plugged in.

Aside from that, a really cool use for it that I've found is running a trebly fuzz right after it. You can leave your foot away from it and get this great sound like the tone rolled off on a neck pickup, sort of a cocked wah sound, then when you stomp on the probe it does these filtered-in treble stabs, great for accenting lead phrases.

hmmm I had a Wah Probe on loan a couple years ago and remember thinking 'cool, Ill need to get one of these' never quite did though ~ thanks for the reminder , it did seem to have a slight synthy quality which may have been more from the touch action - the extra whack on the attack that you cant do with your foot on a physical treadle......
perhaps its time for a Mint Green Mini Probe

I can see the wah probe being alot of fun,,Ive messed around with a ZvexDrip guitar for a while and I would imagine its close to the same circuit,,,although the probe more wah like control rather than hand theremin it might sound close...I wonder what drip>wah probe could produce? glad to see so many enjoy the wah probe,,its now peaked my interest again.
