Please add me to the list! Here is my entry:

The Mayan calendar is divided into months of 20 days, years of 360 days, katun of 7200 days and a baktun of 144,000 days. According to this ancient civilization the world will last for exactly 13 baktun cycles. Their calendar started on 3114-AUG-13 BCE with the birth of Venus and they expected the world to end during the Winter Solstice of 2012.

Arghhhh....... not long now!!

I'm kinda partial to the ragnarok myths. Great winters, wolves eating the sun and moon, giant battles with the gods and all that.

Otherwise, the geek in me always thought the heat death of the universe was sort of funny. So anticlimactic to say that things are just going to keep moving further apart and eventually cool down until it all the same temperature. Science just doesn't make for the same riveting predictions of doom... so practical and serious.

Anyone else remember that end of the world cartoon that was around a few years back? Funny at the time in a silly kinda way and this thread reminded me of it.

I guess we find out if Popes are infallible in 2014.............

2014: Pope Declaration

In the year 1514 Pope Leo IX wrote "I will not see the end of the world, nor will you my brethren, for its time is long in the future, 500 years hence."

I suppose this relates more to a contest giving away an HBOD, but I'll adopt it here for a "Model H"

How about the world population spiraling into food shortages and eventual starvation due to the agricultural supply chain being disrupted by...

SUDDEN MASSIVE REDUCTIONS IN THE HONEYBEE POPULATION!!!

My parents (namely my stepdad) raise bees in North Florida, and they were greatly distressed by these events over the last year...
(From this blog: http://www.associatedcontent.com/articl ... heory.html)

"The first reports came from Florida last fall, and since have been reported in 24 other states. Beekeepers are reporting more than half of their hives empty. It is being called "Colony Collapse Disorder" (CCD) by scientists here and has many worried that the honeybees will fall victim to a mass plague of disease carrying varroa mites, and disrupt the nations food supply. The disappearing honeybee mystery has beekeepers baffled as colonies vanish leaving empty hives behind, save for a few sickly juveniles. Scientists need to study the dead bees, and they are nowhere to be found. Millions of them are gone, 70% of the bee population on the east coast, and 60% in the west.

The varroa mite (introduced from Asia) isn't the only culprit. The exact cause is not known, but there are a number of factors thought to be contributing to the collapse. Transgenic crops, also known as genetically modified organisms, GMOs, or GM crops are engineered to be insect resistant, and 40% of cornfields in the US are genetically engineered. This could be helping to lower the bee's immune system. Many are now calling this the honeybee version of AIDS. Other insects that normally raid a dead colony's hive; are staying away - strange . Along with transgenic crops, the practice of monoculture (The cultivation of a single crop on a farm or in a region or country) is also suspect in the collapse. Just take a look at what happened to US cotton crops in the early 1900's. They were decimated by boll weevils as a result of monoculture.

The U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Agriculture has already held hearings on the missing bees. Germany, and the UK are seeing the same thing but on a smaller scale than in the United States, but with no less importance attached.

Smaller instances of unexpectedly empty hives date back to the 1800s and were called by farmers, autumn collapse, spring dwindle, or disappearing disease. The bees returned, will they this time?"

Weird, eh?
You know the 'Bees have alot going on with the rhythms of the universe with all that dancing they do.

The end of the world will come when my wife kills me for spending $500 on another distortion/overdrive pedal. To vent the remainder of her frustrations (killing me certainly won't rid her of all of it) she will destroy everyone else on the planet, as well.

My personal favorite was the Y2K thing. Lots of people were predicting the end-of-the-world in some form, at least the end of the world as we know it. I am sure that everyone on this forum remembers all the discussions that went on about Y2K; I am sure that everyone here probably took some kind of preparation, be it big or small. That was a real prediction that had a real impact on everyone.

Interestingly, because nothing happened people say "oh, that was a waste of time because nothing happened". That is funny. Nothing happened because of all the extraordinary work people put in to fix the problems before that date was reached. I have personal first hand knowledge of things that could have been absolute disasters for man unless the work was put in to fix them, which it was. Lets hope that the world can fix all the future potential disasters that Donner listed above in the same way that we managed to avert the Y2K problems :-)
