Hello

Postby BJF » Fri Mar 02, 2007 10:24 pm

Hi,

I'm Bjorn Juhl or BJ of BJF Electronics, 41years, happily married with my wife and we have two kids M&M and two cats, Robin & Maja.

These days I live by the Baltic sea, while most of my life I've lived close to a mountain.

I have played guitar since the age of 13 first in punkbands later various styles.I have played guitar with a number of late 70's punkbands, leadguitar with a glampunk band, then guitar with a vocal electric guitar duo, then lead guitar with a Rythm& Blues band, then leadguitar with a powerpopband touring also Europe and Beatles tributeband and The Boys tributeband around Christmas each year http://www.myspace.com/renegadesstockholm , while doing guest appearences with singersongwriters, blues combos and girlbands , coverbands, then rythm guitar in a heavy metalband, lead guitar in a Sex Pistols tributeband

Track 5 from same recording

, then leadguitar and arranger with current band more or less punk some tracks available at http://www.bjfelectronics.com and learning to play ballads and jazzstandards on acoustic and electric and as of 2006 I got a slidetube-this one fits better than the tube I got when turning 20 ;)

Currently my latest band, or rather the songwriter is writing new material and I make so many pedals that there hasn't been that many gigs last year, but I have picked up the acoustic to play ballads with a group of balladeers doing charity shows, in schools and churches , which is fun as I before this only used nylonstrings to make arrangements-ooch I rather not remember the ache in my hands from playing nylonstrings 5 hours aday for two years as a young boy with too small hands- that was more like conquer this or give up as was most gear back then.

I have had many jobs since my first job as a 16 year old, at one of Stockolms oldest musicstores, where I learnt how to do fretjobs and setting up and guitarelectronics aswell as making pick ups as the elder staff knew very little about electrified musical instruments and since I had played electric guitar for a while then they thought I would be in the know so what do you do except learn? Though I have made and serviced pedals and rebuilt and serviced amps since 1980 beginning with an EH Screaming Bird that broke down too many times on me from its poor construction, it was not until I meet my wife that I thought of making such things into a living. Why I was an airtool technician by day and postalworker in the evenings and guitartechnician by night when I was not out on a gig, which was all fun but not so fitting having a family- actually I wanted to be a language teacher or work for the Swedish Department of Words. Oh well, might do that one day too.

For a while I was on my way to become a fulltime musician but I realized I would not be able to always play the music closest to my heart...... uh the hard way...........oh yes I had the singing lessons and was told I'd be a good guitarist if I only knew the circle of 5ths.........shame really all those years learning all those notes on the fretboard and I was even a guitarinstructor at the time .......no that would not do- still I played all lead parts and set all sounds which I told at the time......so I decided to only play for fun and only the music I'd like and formed new bands having fun until I could go back to my roots and have made many gigs with no other ambition than to make good music and having fun.
On this the 7th year of making BJF pedals I testdrive all pedals I make and amplifiers at various volumes- not really playing, but practice while mostly listening to textures.....
Somehow part of me is a musician- I try not to forget that, and what fun that holds.
I have luckily avoided tinnitus from changing the ear next to the crash cymbal and by enjoying silence now and then to give the ears some rest and that I think is much thanks to Tom Weeler
and his excellent book The Guitar Book and the chapter on hearing damage or the Grateful Dead......

Without distribution through Custom-Sounds you would not have heard of me on this side of the pond, nor would I have had any interest in getting myself a computor. Come to think of it I would never had gone to CBGB's nor eating sushi................hm, I'm becoming 42 this year and so I might just learn the Riddle of the Universe.........great fun awaits!

Hi,

Great to see you Trisonic,
No, I am afraid I am not as I have two lectures right about then in Gothenburg at the Gothenburg Guitar show. I dare say I'd have liked to come to NYC, maybe later.

Harri and Eero will come though.

Take care
BJ

Ahhh, Gothenburg. Totally off topic but I'll always have a soft spot for that place after the European Cup Winners Cup final of 1983 when Aberdeen beat Real Madrid in Gothenburg to bring home the trophy. I was seven years old and had no idea where Sweden was but I knew Gothenburg was a place of dreams!

Hi

Thanks Johan, it was great fun meeting you and your lovely wife too.

Ah, yes soon to be released. I'm also thinking I might dub it in german and and then maybe have spanish subtitles......

I am most happy you enjoy your muscle OD- especially as you were involved in it's development

Anyway my highlights from the Gbg show, included, rocking on the Lehnert Rutger Svanhane amp: just one volume control, small combo about 11Watts but an inspiring sound to boot.
There was this guy playing Bach through it, but I can say any Rock 'n'roll or blues or punk pieces I threw at it sounded great to my ear

Ruokanga had three guitars of particurlar interest: one reliced strat type and I understand the Ruokanga crew had malicious fun kicking that into vintage condition ;) ; and then a teletype guitar with perfect temprament frets that made a very seasick look but that actually worked just fine; and thirdly a goldtop Duke that had a similar layout as a Les Paul, though it was remarkably light and well balanced thanks to the spanish cedar and birchtop Juha told me. This Duke would be a serious contender for humbucking guitar styles.

During my seminars and on display I had the most amazing backline consisting of a -67 Super Reverb, a Marshall model1987(50Watt bass) and matching 4x12, a vintage VOX AC-30TB, a Custom Audio and an MP CS-40 with matching 4x12 Eminence Red Fang loaded MP cab all selectable through Lehle switching and two pedalboards connected in series containing:
Peterson strobostomp>BJF LRT>BJF PGC>BJF VCF>BJF MGMV>BJF PPF/CAF duounit>BJF SBEQ>BJF RRB>BJF HB>BOSS VB-2>Memory Lane analog Delay>EH Holy Grail>> (pedalboard two) BJF PGC> Muscle Overdrive proto>VOX pattern light OD> BJF CAF>BJF DRD>MP MRD(proto)>modified Ibanez AD-80>MP DBD.

The large number of gainpedals were set up to show how different circuits align to different amps.

The Normal channel on the VOX AC-30 liked mostly the VOX pattern proto, which on the other amps appeared bright; the Super Reverb and Custom Audio ( clean channel) and Marshall liked the Muscle OD proto, which appeared muffled on the VOX; the Marshall liked DRD and MRD and the muscle OD proto and the RRB; with SBEQ in line the Super Reverb liked anything thrown at it while MRD was also very nice alone on the Super; the MP liked all pedals but required slightly different settings on the base sound to do so.

A bit surprisingly the VCF attracted quite a few jazz players that played horn style things through it, less surprising was funk players giving the VCF a whack.

It was also a personal pleasure meeting the God Lyd crew that were very gentle people also with a load of fine things on exhibition. They had the Suhr Badger, which I didn't try but well heard.

At the Thesegoto 11 booth were also Cusack pedals and the Screamer Fuzz attracted attention and it is also a fun pedal to my ears.

Down stairs Lundgren Pick ups showed the whole line and a couple of those were also used in a custom experiment for Ruokanga guitars. I thought of trying a few of those as he has this strat type guitar that you can slide in pickups mounted on a piece of wood in three positions , but I don't enjoy listening through a pod, but a swift way of comparing what a specific pick up would do.

Somehow I'm quite content with guitars and only a few attracted my attention, though there were piles and piles of instruments to see, though among them a Greco Les Paul- that reminded me much of my younger days, a 60's Fender baby blue strat, but I allready have one and finally a pink Daisy Rock dubble cut- actually a nice guitar - it would almost be great fun to use one just because ;).

Saturday night was fun at the Hard Rock Cafe seeing Greg Koch preforming, also featuring the Zebra from Electric Banana Band and laughing on the bus back to hotel with the Thesegoto 11 crew aswell as the guys from Lehnert amps and Revintage amps

All in all this year's Gbg show had a wide range - almost the size of the bottom floor at Frankfurt but of only scandinavian exhibitors but all major companies represented by their distributors of course.

There were some new guitar models and amplifier models from companies I have not heard of before, but not many I felt like trying to see what they could do for me..........those I felt like trying though I was mostly pleasently surprised by.

There were many fun people to meet and talk with though some I don't see too often and shows are also exchange of ideas

Have fun
BJ
