Folk Boost

ok, Bjorn was kind enough to send this over for us to try out. As per Bjorn:

Code: Select all
Folk Booster:
Sports 25dB boost and should be an easy build and also sound good.
As a sidenote back in the day EVH used a booster according to Pinkstrat, and the only thing he told me about it was that it was great and that it was driven by an NE5534.
NE5534 was also back in the 1980's a new IC chip that was revolutionary to Audio and it's one of my favourites to this day and it has since become an industrial standard in many circuits from RIAA stages to linedrivers.

It looks like we have a rather cool boost circuit and a buffer circuit. Anyone want to try a layout/vero board/breadboard?

*sorry about this image not working for awhile. Link is fixed now.

(Thanks to JFromel for drawing this one out over in the Folk Buffer thread)

I'm really excited to see this moving forward! Thanks Björn!

looking forward to the vero board version -- any chance someone would be interested in sourcing/sorting parts into kits? :)

I think I'll be asking for a soldering iron this xmas!

I can get behind this suggestion! I'd even pay a little extra for a kit ready to build. Having a 10 month old son, there isn't a ton of time for sourcing parts, research, etc.... A kit would be amazing.

Maybe even some kits with Donnerboxes?!?!? Mmmmmm....

Yea, I am a complete novice and this will be my first shot at a built so sourcing parts is a little outside my comfort zone. Anyone an amateur builder who could hook us up. Feel free to mark up kits a few bucks for your time --

And donnerboxes/kits would be KILLERRRRR :pedallove

Bold Blue (Folk) Boost?
Bright Brass (Folk) Boost?
Bejeweled Bronze (Folk) Boost?
Brutal Burgundy (Folk) Boost?
Bubbly Blonde (Folk) Boost?

I like alliteration in my pedal names...

Totally agree with both paying extra for kits and Donner boxes.

How 'bout a Folk Booster / Buffer, with the Folk Buffer switchable?

If it isn't too difficult that sounds awesome. Can anyone speak up who has had successful builds? Until we have a sort of leader on this adventure, I fear it is the blind leading the blind in terms of the actual build.

I think just the Folk Boost is fine unless it gets into MP or BF version and I don't think we'd be naming it then. MP already has the ruby but BF could use a boost (if you'd like, Donner) but I think we need to see how this goes first. All of the other Folk Projects kept this simple "Folk" designation.

What I'm thinking is the boost section is selected with one stomp and the bypass is either true bypass or the Folk buffer selectable with a dptp toggle.

I don't have any experience with designing a circuit but have a built a handful of kits and have sourced my own parts before. I would be able to source most parts for a kit but I would rather outsource production of a circuit board and I would love to get some Donnerboxes for this when everything else is coming along. If it doesn't work out to get some Donnerboxes then I can drill and paint a batch for us. Anyone know where to get a circuit board printed if we provide a design? I'll ask Madbean but don't really know where else I could ask.

Can someone bread bord this and test it? I've been meaning to get the tools to do so but have not yet. I guess it's just time to go shopping and build a prototype!
